This term, sport was high on the agenda at Hemyock Primary School. Children took part in a variety of sporting events, such as the Swimming Gala in Tiverton, as well as keeping up the usual after school activities. The tag rugby club sent three teams to battle it out at the Rugby Festival on 4th March 2008, organised by Uffculme School through the East Devon School Sports Partnership. The 'A' Team sadly did not get through to the semi finals, but both the 'B' and the 'C' Team did - having to play each other. The 'B' team made it into the friendly final and won the tournament. Well done!
The basketball team had equal success when they went to play in the league final, winning the Culm Valley Schools Association basket ball shield at Uffculme School on 6th March 2008. The netball team, playing on the same day, in the final for their league, achieved a fantastic second place. Both teams were congratulated not only on their achievement but also on their good behaviour and excellent sportsmanship. They did the school proud.
The football teams have continued to do well this term and we have seen a girls only team play several times with great credit. The junior boys team played their best football of the season in the match against Stockland on 28th February.
Twelve children (in teams of four) from Year 6 took part in two Exmoor Challenge practice walks this month, in preparation for the main event in May. The first walk was an 8 mile walk around Hemyock. The second walk was along the beautiful (but hilly) coastline at Lynton and Lynmouth and the children followed a 10 mile route, navigating directions. Puffed out but showing tremendous stamina, the parents also managed the route successfully.
We are asking for volunteers to join the governing body of the school. Many of our current members will end their term in office shortly and we would like to ensure that the body will continue running smoothly. We tend to meet once a term as a whole governing body, though you would be encouraged to join a subcommittee which will meet once a term again. Being a governor is a great responsibility but is also very satisfactory as you will be able to contribute to the future success of the school, leading it onto pastures new. If you are interested at all, you could come to one of our meetings to get an impression and ring the school to get in touch with our chair of governors, Mrs Janet Morrison.
Staff news: Mrs Leach has left our primary school and we wish her all the best for the future. Meanwhile Mrs Taylor has taken over Class 4 fulltime. We have been able to extend Miss Cornish's teaching contract until the end of the summer term. Miss Cornish joined us in January to teach the Year 1 children for the Spring term due to increased funding from the local authority.
Other news: The school is currently revamping the library and planning permission has been granted to extend the upper key stage classrooms to increase the teaching space. Unfortunately this will mean that the swimming pool will be out of bounds for the summer holiday as building work will commence.
Happy Easter to you all.
