A Happy New Year to you all. So much seems to have happened since I last wrote that it is difficult to know where to begin.
Once again Joyce found a superb speaker for us in December - Mr Chris Bartlett gave a beautifully illustrated talk about Irises and his love for this particular flower clearly showed as he spoke so knowledgeably but interestingly about them.
Later in December saw the Festival of Trees in St Mary's Church - Jane is to be congratulated for having had such a wonderful idea - the Church looked absolutely stunning with the trees decorated in all manner of ways to reflect the various organizations. Sandy and her team of helpers made a wonderful job of "our tree" - I particularly liked the flowerpot man on the top!!
Our meeting in January always takes the form of a social evening and despite not being quite so well attended as normal (perhaps the ghastly weather had something to do with that!!) a good time was enjoyed by all. The Committee had provided a great assortment of food, Christine did a gardening quiz which Lizzie won with a very good score and many members provided wrapped gifts for the free raffle so most people went home with a prize!! The evening concluded with entertainment on the harmonica from Mac interrupted by a strangely clad "gentleman" from warmer climes whose command of the English language (or lack of it!) led to much hilarity. (I may be wrong but he bore a very strong resemblance to Paul - but perhaps he just has distant relatives from that part of the world!)
Another reminder that our Spring Show is on 5 April, 2008 and the following are the classes open to non-members, so this advance notice should give you all time to prepare your entries!
Class 46 A photograph of a river scene
Class 47 Floral painting - any medium
Class 48 Complete the limerick - There was a young farmer called Sam
Class 49 An item of hand knitting
And for the children
Class 50 An animal from fruit and veg
Our next meeting is on February 13th when Mrs Houghton will talk about planting for late summer interest.
Look forward to seeing you all again then - as always new members will be made very welcome.
