Chapel Café celebrates 5 years of service to the community. It is always a surprise to visitors to Chapel Café in Hemyock when, having enjoyed a selection of light refreshments, they discover that the bill comes to exactly zero. Whether it’s a bacon buttie or a toasted tea cake and coffee, that is how things are done at the Wednesday morning Café run by members of Hemyock Baptist Church which titles itself – where the village meets for coffee.
No one can quite remember whose suggestion it was to charge nothing when the project began 5 years ago this week said Team Leader Anne Sworn, but since then people’s generosity has meant that thousands of pounds have gone through the free will basket. People have always given more than we might have otherwise charged said Anne and after a very few expenses the income goes abroad. Education projects in Cambodia, medical help in Peru, Orphans in Uganda have all been recipients of funds from Chapel Cafe.
